Lifeguards

How Aquatics and CPR training build skills that last a lifetime.

Across the country, lifeguards are often seen as steady figures keeping swimmers safe. But lifeguarding is far more than a seasonal job. For many aquatics professionals, it is the start of a meaningful career built on responsibility, leadership, and lifesaving skills. At Swan Aquatics, becoming a lifeguard can be a first step toward long-term professional growth in aquatics management, public safety, education, and even CPR instruction.

Many firefighters, paramedics, teachers, coaches, and nurses can trace their early training back to the pool deck. Lifeguard training builds the ability to evaluate risk, communicate clearly under pressure, and act decisively when seconds matter. These are foundational skills that translate well beyond aquatics into careers that demand trust, teamwork, and accountability.

For others, lifeguarding opens the door to professional aquatics leadership — a growing, specialized field that combines operations, safety, and community impact

A Career Built Poolside: From Lifeguard to Aquatics Leader

Swan Aquatics was founded by someone who understands the responsibility of the lifeguard role firsthand. Our founder and CEO, Melissa Musil, spent years as a Division I swimmer, coach, and ocean rescue lifeguard. During one summer on duty, she rescued a four-year-old child from the water — a moment that underscored how quickly emergencies unfold and how critical proper training and proper lifeguard presence truly can be.

That experience shaped a lifelong mission. Melissa believed lifesaving skills should not be limited to professionals alone. Families, schools, workplaces, and communities should feel confident taking action in an emergency. Swan Aquatics and its sister division, SwanCPR.com, were created to deliver accessible, real-world lifesaving training through teams deeply rooted in water safety.

Melissa Musil shared that "from the beginning, Swan Aquatics was built around one belief: everyone deserves the chance to swim safely and enjoy the water."

Today, Swan Aquatics is a national aquatics management company with a leadership team that reflects the many pathways into this field. Many leaders began as lifeguards, swim instructors, or competitive swimmers and grew into roles such as facility managers, trainers, and regional directors. Others, like our HR Director Tara, bring backgrounds in exercise science, health promotion, and coaching — reinforcing that aquatics leadership benefits from diverse professional perspectives.

Stacy Burton, Director of Facility Operations, shared "My mother invested in my love and knowledge for swimming. Driving me nearly an hour each way to my swim lessons. Knowing that swimming isn't just recreational but a life skill. I follow that same belief. It starts simple but learning to float and breathe in a place that challenges you can teach you to challenge yourself outside the pool long after those lessons are over. A summer lifeguard or swim instructor job can grow into a love for working with people. Bring confidence to trust your instincts. Training yourself to see beyond the surface of everyday life."

“Hiring in aquatics isn’t just about filling positions, it’s about finding people who are truly committed to learning and growth. By investing in those individuals through training and ongoing development, we create stronger teams over the long term.” – Tara Colosimo, Swan Aquatics’ Director of Human Resources

Their experiences point to a shared truth: lifeguarding is not just a first job. It can be a profession, a passion, and a pathway to leadership.

A Pathway With Real Skills: Lifeguard, CPR, and Leadership Training

Lifeguard training is intentionally challenging because the work matters. As an American Red Cross Licensed Training Provider, Swan Aquatics delivers lifeguard certification courses that meet full Red Cross standards. Guards learn swimming and rescue skills, CPR, AED use, First Aid, emergency communication, crisis recognition, and risk evaluation — skills that build confidence and prepare you to act when it counts.

Beyond lifesaving techniques, Swan Aquatics trains every employee in professionalism and customer service. Lifeguards and instructors learn how to create a welcoming, safe environment for every swimmer, family member, and guest. We hold all employees — from new hires to leadership — to the highest professional standards because safety depends on trust, consistency, and accountability.

This training gives you more than a certification. It builds a professional skill set that can grow with you. Many team members advance into instructor roles, facility leadership, or positions within our Red Cross training programs at SwanCPR.com.

Few entry-level jobs offer this level of responsibility and development. As a lifeguard, you learn to stay calm under pressure, work as part of a team, communicate clearly, and lead with confidence — skills that open doors in aquatics and far beyond.

A Launchpad for Future Careers in Safety, Education, and Healthcare

Because lifeguarding requires confidence in high-stakes environments, it naturally prepares people for careers in public safety and service. Former guards frequently move on to firefighting, EMT and paramedic programs, nursing, teaching, coaching, municipal recreation, and aquatics management roles nationwide.

Many return years later to share how the decision-making and accountability they learned as lifeguards shaped their careers. Others continue growing within Swan Aquatics, helping lead programs that build safer, stronger aquatics communities across the country.

Real-World Experience, Even for Famous Faces

Actor Noah Schnapp, best known as Will from Stranger Things, took a summer job as a lifeguard during a break from filming — something he described as a way to stay grounded and enjoy a regular teen experience outside of fame.

Years earlier, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also spent time as a lifeguard before his career in athletics and entertainment took off — another example of how lifesaving roles often precede leadership in high-performance careers.File:Dwayne The Rock Johnson 2009 street portrait.jpg
